Before the g-code can be written, the transition points for the machining tool path needs to be determined. In g-code, the tool path is represented by a series of linear and circular moves. Each transition point, ie where straight line meets a curve or where curves of different radius meets, needs to be specified in terms of its X-axis and Y-axis coordinate.

The effect of hollowing out the bottle opener was explored with Z88Auora, the GUI version of Z88, an open source FEA software. The ascii mesh was created using FreeCAD and imported into Z88.

Product Dimensioning with LibreCAD
A dxf file was exported from FreeCAD and imported into LibreCAD . . . show details
A dxf file was exported from FreeCAD and imported into LibreCAD for dimensioning the endpoints for writing g-code. Since the current version of FreeCAD, v0.12, is millimeter only, a reduction factor of 25.4 was applied to the imported dxf file to derive the measurements in inch.

Sketched in with LibreCAD, v1.0.1, then 3D modeled with FreeCAD v.12-5382, on Debian (Squeeze) GNU/Linux. The actual size is ~4" x 0.5" x 0.1". The material is 304 stainless. The next step is to write the gcode and machine the actual product. Followed by laser marking with CerMark.

Haas VF-2SS Chip Tray
A simple chip try was needed to catch the metal swarf and reduce coolant tank contamination. The chip was was designed with OpenSCAD and acrylic panels were laser cut with the ULS M300 35W laser engraver. The laser cut acrylic panels are glued together with acrylic solvant.

Sewing Machine Stand
A Tippman Aerostich (Made in USA) pnematically operated sewing machine was recently acquired and was in need of a stand. A quick sketch was rendered using OpenSCAD, the square tubing frame was welded with a Lincoln SP170-T MIG welder, and the table top was routed using the Haas SR-100 CNC router.
